ORC Fall '23: My Daughter's Nursery

After 8 long weeks of the One Room Challenge, making over our home gym into a nursery for our baby girl, we’ve reached the finish line! It’s been a dream designing this magical space for our daughter. Read on to see all the details I incorporated in the design to make this room feel special (and find links/sources at the end!)

The crib. I waited MONTHS for this crib to come back in stock after falling in love with it when I was about 4 months pregnant. I almost gave up hope, but I couldn’t find a similar enough alternative to pull the trigger on. Thankfully it was restocked just in time! This crib is the perfect vintage style I was looking for and the rubbed brass finish gives a lovely antique touch.

The rocking chair is a gamechanger - it rocks, swivels, and reclines. With the cozy boucle fabric and cushy seat, the first time I sat in it I could envision all the sleepless nights there with baby girl, all snuggled up together!

The patchwork quilt hanging over the side of her crib is my most cherished item in the nursery - it was handmade by my grandmother. This will be a precious heirloom to hold onto forever, and it fits perfectly with the color palette of this room!

One of the things I found most difficult to nail down in here was the rug. I originally picked a moroccan patterned cream and pink shag rug. Once it arrived, I immediately knew it was not the right fit in here. I didn’t like the shag texture underfoot, and being a cream color I could see lots of deep rug cleaning in my future (no thank you!)

I went on the hunt and (several hours later), found this beauty in the Becki Owens x Surya collection. This time when the rug arrived, I instantly fell in love with the subtle vintage pattern, blush and cream tones, and low pile.

The dresser - without a doubt the most functional piece in the nursery, and will be the most used piece of furniture, especially in her first few months!

I styled the dresser top with a changing pad (essential), diaper caddy (must-have), vintage canister to hold pacifiers, antique vase with faux greenery, and a rainbow stacking toy.

My favorite detail of the dresser is the knobs. I remember having special floral knobs on the furniture pieces my dad would make for me as a kid, and I wanted to continue this tradition with my daughter’s room. These brass floral-shaped knobs were the perfect touch to complement the squiggly-shaped mirror above!

How precious is this curtain setup? I melted when I found these swan curtain rod finials. Just another touch of whimsy for this space. But let’s focus on what really is important - quality drapery! These custom curtains check all the boxes: they’re privacy lined, light filtering (a pair of blinds behind helps block out more as needed), and are beautifully soft to the touch.

Baby girl is due any day now… I can’t wait to bring her home to this whimsical space!
